Catholic Stations of the Cross: Sacred Art for Lent and Parish Renewal

Lent is a time to reflect on Christ’s suffering and to prepare our hearts for the joy of His Resurrection. As Jesus rises and brings new life, our worship spaces can be renewed alongside our faith—sanctuaries, chapels, and devotional areas made to reflect the hope and joy of Easter. Stations of the Cross offer a way to enter that sacred narrative, allowing parishioners to move through the Passion with contemplation, prayer, and a sense of the life Christ promises. Each Station marks a step toward the light of the Resurrection, helping the faithful experience the promise that Easter brings.

At Rohn & Associates Design, we create and restore Stations of the Cross for churches, chapels, schools, and shrines. Each project balances traditional Catholic iconography, craftsmanship, and liturgical function, helping communities immerse themselves in the story of Christ’s Passion in a tangible way.

Contemporary Cast Stations with Custom Illumination

Saint John Vianney Catholic Church—Houston, Texas

For this Houston parish, our team recast fourteen three-dimensional Stations (above) originally created by a distinguished stone artisan. Each panel was refined to harmonize with the newly renovated sanctuary. Gold accents and subtle shadowing emphasize the depiction of Christ’s Passion, and custom lighting was designed to highlight each scene clearly. These Stations support seasonal Lenten observances and daily Mass. This series can be recreated and customized for other churches, parish sanctuary renovations, or expansions, with finishes, scale adjustments, and placement tailored to each sacred space.

Life-Size Exterior Bronze Stations of the Cross

Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Shrine—Brownsville, Texas

These awe-inspiring life-size Stations of the Cross at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Shrine allow pilgrims to engage with Christ’s Passion while blending earthly simplicity with divine majesty. Cast in bronze and set within a serene garden featuring local fauna, thorn bushes, rough-hewn rock transported from Austin, and rough-cut oak crosses from Pennsylvania, this outdoor installation is humble yet commanding, inviting pilgrims to pause, reflect, and enter into prayerful contemplation.

Restored French Gothic Stations with Gold Leaf Detailing

Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church—Lambertville, New Jersey

In Lambertville, New Jersey, our studio led a full renovation of a historic French Gothic church, restoring its Stations of the Cross using trompe l’oeil techniques to make each scene feel lifelike, dignified, and stylistically cohesive. Gold leaf backgrounds in the niches illuminate the path of the Cross, guiding parishioners visually as they reflect on Christ’s journey. The restoration maintained the historic character while allowing the images to function fully in contemporary worship.

Stations of the Cross Designed for Catholic Schools

Stations designed for children transform a school chapel into a space for faith formation. At Saint Gabriel Catholic School—Austin, Texas—and Seton LaSalle Catholic High School—Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—Stations invite students to move through the Passion in a way that feels immediate and accessible, with figures and gestures scaled so children feel present within each scene. Colors, composition, and expression balance the sorrow of the Passion with the glory of the Resurrection, helping young minds understand courage, compassion, and perseverance. These youth-focused illustrations engage students in Catholic prayer, devotion, and faith formation, creating a meaningful connection with Christ’s journey.
