Custom Hand-Carved Holy Trinity Crucifix for Catholic Church Sanctuary at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Visalia

Rohn & Associates Design, Inc., experts in Catholic liturgical art and liturgical design, shaped the new St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Visalia, CA, uniting the parish community through meaningful imagery. Among the custom artworks, a monumental Holy Trinity centerpiece immediately draws the eye, depicting God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at the heart of Christian faith.

Crafted from a rare piece of native Sequoia wood and set against the new retablo mural, this crucifix became the focal point of the church’s liturgical art program. Liturgical designer Rolf Rohn guided the project, designing all liturgical art and liturgical furnishings in close consultation with parish leadership and the building committee.

Rolf ensured that every detail—from expressions and gestures to attire and symbolic elements—aligned with the parish’s vision and liturgical principles. Once approved, a renowned Spanish sculptor hand-carved the figures from Lindenwood and painted them with meticulous attention to color and form.

The towering figure of God the Father, envisioned as guide and protector, gazes over the life-size crucifix of Jesus Christ, suspended by a custom-engineered steel support system. Rendered in realistic flesh tones, the figures create a powerful connection for parishioners. God’s burgundy gown, edged in gold brocade using the ancient Estofado technique, emphasizes His divine majesty, while Jesus’ modest loincloth emphasizes His humanity. The Latin inscription INRI crowns the crucifix, declaring Jesus as King of the Jews.

Above them, the Holy Spirit shines in radiant light, connecting the star-studded Evangelist dome above to the earthly retablo below, symbolically encompassing heaven and earth. This sacred imagery visually communicates God’s enduring love, guidance, and mercy to the parish community.
