Rohn Custom Studio artists just put the finishing touches on a colorful dome mural at the new St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Visalia, CA. The church is purported to be the largest Catholic parish church in the United States, with a seating capacity of 3,200. It features a 38-foot retablo painting depicting life-size saints and transcendent new artwork to complement the California mission-inspired architecture.
With our staff artists overseeing local talent, all guided by Liturgical Designer Rolf Rohn, we expedited the dome's artwork. Adorned in antique gold, the Four Evangelists depicted on the octagon-shaped dome reflect the parish's vision: to glorify God beyond the cosmos while serving as a unifying space for its diverse parishioners—Latino, Portuguese, white, Vietnamese, and Filipino, along with farmworkers, farmers, and professionals—to gather and meet their Lord.
We represented each 10-foot figure with their respective symbols—man, lion, ox, and eagle—as depicted in the Book of Revelation. An icon believed to have been painted by St. Luke flanks his right side. St. Thomas Mount National Shrine in Chennai, India, houses the original artwork. Four angels encircle the dome, each holding ribbons with the profound Latin words echoing Catholic tradition: Sanctum, Unum, Catholicum, and Apostolicum.
Check back to see the final installation of sacred art that will complete this inspirational environment.
The church will be dedicated on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023.
