Liturgical Design Supporting Seminarian Formation at Casa Santa Maria, Pontifical North American College
Since its inception in 1971, the ICTE has enriched the theological education of over two thousand priests, allowing them to rejuvenate their faith in accordance with Saint Paul’s invocation: “I remind you to rekindle the gift of faith that is within you.” (2 Tim 1:6). To uphold this tradition of excellence, the NAC is currently renovating the Saint John Vianney Chapel.
Father Michael G. Wensing, director of the sabbatical program, collaborated closely with Liturgical Designer Rolf Rohn, Liturgical Interior Designer Kathy Maglicco, and their team—including consultant Monsignor James Moroney—over the past six months to bring his vision for this sacred space to life.
Together, they meticulously designed the chapel so that the environment and its appointments reflect and encourage the mission of priestly formation. Highlights include a hand-carved oak statue of Mary, Mother of Priests, presenting the Christ Child for adoration; a Cosmatesque masterpiece based on a Medieval Tabernacle from the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine; and a hand-painted, gold-leafed mural reproduction of the Mosaic of the Cross, Vine, and Branches depicted in the ancient Church of San Clemente.
We were also delighted to sponsor the Rector's Album for the NAC Rector's Dinner on April 15th. More than 500 guests convened at the seminary on Janiculum Hill to celebrate Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, and the Honorable Francis and Mrs. Kathleen Rooney, recipients of the annual Rector’s Award for their generous backing of seminarian training for future Catholic Church leadership.
The dedication of the St. John Vianney Chapel is scheduled for June 2010.
