A new chapel delves into the essence of faith, retelling the story of our people and Savior through forms, shapes, and colors. Rohn & Associates Design had the privilege of collaborating with Archbishop Schnurr and Father Anthony Brausch to plan and execute an extensive redesign of the Immaculate Conception Chapel at St. Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. They envisioned a sacred space that would appropriately witness the preparation of seminarians studying for ministry in the Church. Together, we aimed to inspire these students in their priestly formation, enabling them to face the challenges of spreading their message of faith.
Liturgical Designer Rolf Rohn and his team developed and executed the theme of "The Moment of Christian Witness," striving to instill in the seminarians a profound desire to present the truth of the Gospel. This began with a custom altar featuring a reliquary at its base, marked with the five wounds of Christ on the mensa and surrounded by a crown of thorns, serving as a reminder of Christ's Passion.
Central to the vision is a new sanctuary wall mosaic in powerful red and gold smalti, depicting a scene from the Book of Revelation, where the elders worship the Lord God on His throne. The Twelve Apostles and St. Paul represent the multitude of nations saved through the Gospel, while a Triumphant Lamb radiates light, illuminating the altar and all who worship in faith. To the left and right are images of St. John the Evangelist, the author of Revelation, and the Immaculate Conception, the first Church disciple. The chapel's custom art glass reflects timeless Eucharistic stories.
Complementary custom elements, including the ambo, tabernacle, wall reliquary, flooring, and an updated lighting system, complete this vibrant space for prayer and meditation for seminarians and the community. The prominent placement of a weighty crucifix, the only three-dimensional figure, serves as a powerful reminder of enduring faith and determination through the shared agony of the dying Christ.
Monsignor Frank Lane, PhD, wrote in Athenaeum magazine: "Especially here in this place, where priests are formed, the chapel’s real gift might be to instill in the hearts of those called by Christ something of the vision of the Glory of the Lord. A gift they can carry into the lives of those they serve."
Our goal to represent the theme of witnessing the truth is now vividly expressed throughout the chapel. The renovated sanctuary communicates the hope, peace, and strength found in the love of Christ. What was once a seldom-used dark space is now a true testament of faith.
We extend our gratitude to the Building Committee for their inspiration, guidance, and trust throughout this historic project.
