Custom Catholic Church Mural Design: Nativity, Holy Trinity & Crucifixion

Custom Catholic church mural design for a Tennessee church renovation, depicting the Nativity, Holy Trinity, and Crucifixion.

A beautifully designed sanctuary mural can bring Scripture and the mysteries of the Catholic faith into a parish, giving parishioners a meaningful way to contemplate the life of Christ and deepen their understanding of Church teaching.

At Rohn & Associates Design, Inc., we work with priests, parish leaders, and building committees to develop original sacred art for Catholic churches. Catholic liturgical designer Rolf Rohn and artist Renate Rohn are currently working with the church team on a proposed renovation project in Tennessee. Under Rolf's direction, Renate created this detailed drawing for a custom sanctuary mural bringing together the Nativity, the Holy Trinity, and the Crucifixion. Her drawing reflects the church team's input, with the proposed mural considered in relation to the sanctuary, its furnishings, and the celebration of the Mass.

The Nativity of Our Lord: A Detailed Depiction of the Holy Family

At the center of the mural design is the Nativity of Our Lord, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph gathered around the Christ Child. Renate captured their wonder and devotion through careful expressions and gestures. Mary gazes toward her newborn Son, while Joseph stands beside her, sharing in the joy of this moment. An angel appears behind the Holy Family, its outstretched arms connecting the earthly scene with the heavenly imagery above, proclaiming the good news.

Shepherds gather from the surrounding hills in traditional robes and head coverings, depicting those who came to Bethlehem to see the infant Savior (Luke 2:8–20). On the opposite side, the Magi make their way toward the Child, including a richly dressed visitor kneeling before Him. Their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh honor Christ as King and Savior. Renate placed a prominent Star of Bethlehem above the Magi, illustrating Matthew's account of the star that guided them to the newborn King (Matthew 2:1–12).

Renate also included the traditional ox and donkey near the manger, along with sheep and other animals, reflecting the humble setting of Christ's birth. These details enrich the Nativity scene and give parishioners of all ages elements to discover.

The Holy Trinity: God the Father and the Holy Spirit Above Christ

Above the Nativity, the proposed mural presents the Holy Trinity. God the Father appears in the heavens with His arms extended, enveloped in radiant light. Beneath Him, the Holy Spirit is shown with wings outstretched. This imagery recalls the Baptism of Christ, when the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and the Father's voice proclaimed Jesus His beloved Son (Matthew 3:16–17).

Stars scattered across the upper portion of the mural suggest a celestial setting, while rays of light extend downward to the earthly realm. These elements express the divine nature of Christ and the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, giving parishioners an opportunity to contemplate the Holy Trinity during Mass and throughout their visits to the church.

The Crucifix, Tabernacle & the Eucharistic Presence of Christ

The proposed design includes a large crucifix between the heavenly imagery and the Nativity, directly above the Holy Family. On both sides of the crucifix are angels holding banners inscribed with “Gloria in excelsis Deo” (Glory to God in the highest). The figure of Jesus on the Cross links the birth of Christ with His sacrifice on Calvary. The infant Jesus resting in the manger is the same Lord who will give His life for the salvation of mankind. Together, the Nativity and Crucifixion point toward the Resurrection, completing the story of Christ's saving work.

Beneath the mural, the tabernacle and its stand are shown with sanctuary candles on either side. The sanctuary lamps signify the presence of Christ in the Eucharist reserved in the tabernacle. The mural's imagery complements this focus, connecting the events of Christ's life with His sacrifice made present during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as the faithful receive Him in Holy Communion.

Original Sacred Art That Reflects the Faith of the Parish

The proposed mural is being developed as part of the church's broader renovation, with careful attention to the sanctuary and its furnishings. We look forward to sharing the completed mural and the role it will play in the renewed sanctuary.
