Honoring Michael the Archangel in Stained Glass at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church

Our work at Our Lady of the Assumption in Copiague, NY, continues as an offering of beauty to God and His Church. After the devastating fire that destroyed the original building, the parish has come together with remarkable strength and generosity to rebuild—a true testament to the resilience of the Catholic Church. Liturgical designer Rolf Rohn developed the entire interior of the new church—formerly an auditorium—transforming the space into a reverent environment with many elements salvaged from closed churches. Just as Heaven’s protector prevailed over darkness, the people of this community have risen from the ashes, restoring their holy home with hope and perseverance.

As the sanctuary took shape, our team designed and executed murals of Our Lady, God the Father, and the Seven Sorrows of Mary—paintings that now enrich the space, inviting contemplation and prayer. Building on this foundation of iconography, we were honored to take the next step: the creation of a stained glass window depicting Michael the Archangel. Conceived by Rolf and realized through the artistry of Renate Rohn under his guidance, this striking image will occupy a 10' x 5' window behind the altar. It will serve as both a catechesis in light and a visible reminder of the spiritual battle waged by the heavenly hosts.

What began as a black-and-white sketch evolved through many stages of refinement, each iteration bringing us closer to capturing the significance of this revelatory moment. A small color rendering offers a glimpse into the vision, bringing the archangel's victory to life. Through thoughtful use of light and shadow, the design highlights the enduring power of divine justice and the timeless truth that Christ has conquered sin and death.

This image of the archangel—spear in hand, triumphant over the forces of evil—honors the holy traditions of the Church and stands as a bold testament to the glory of God and the protection of His faithful. Every shade has been thoughtfully chosen and every line carefully drawn to ensure that the window harmonizes with its surroundings and enhances the liturgical setting.

An important milestone in the journey toward completing this window and the renewed place of worship has been reached. We eagerly anticipate the installation of this artwork, confident that it will fill the church with divine illumination, offering a lasting tribute to the unwavering spirit of this community. It is our privilege to contribute to the rebuilding of this sacred house, where meaningful art will inspire the faithful and elevate hearts and minds to God for generations to come.
