This month, the Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption in Marietta, OH, welcomed the installation of a captivating Pelicanus sculpture and mosaic, meticulously crafted by a Rohn artist. This poignant Pelicanus serves as a profound symbol of our Lord, Jesus Christ—the ultimate Redeemer—who sacrificed His life for our salvation. Just as the mother pelican once wounded herself to nourish her young with her own blood, so too did Christ offer Himself for our spiritual sustenance.
In addition to this striking sculpture, our artist skillfully marbleized the wood lectern, seamlessly integrating it with the surrounding furniture. Two intricately designed mosaics adorn the front panels, with the upper one proudly displaying the Jerusalem cross—a powerful representation of Christ's command to spread the Gospel worldwide.
This Pelicanus sculpture stands as a poignant yet meaningful addition to the comprehensive interior renovation undertaken by Rohn, aiming to inspire all who enter St. Mary’s Basilica. The renovation encompassed every aspect of the interior space, from new sacred art and liturgical furniture to meticulously crafted mosaics, murals, statuary, and interior decoration—all carefully designed to create a harmonious and liturgically correct environment.
