Designing a New Chapel for the Capuchin Friars in Papua New Guinea

Rohn & Associates Design embarked on an inspirational three-year journey to support the Capuchin Friars of Papua New Guinea in realizing their new chapel in Bomana, culminating in high praise in the August 2012 issue of Capuchin Missionary Partner Update. When approached by Bishop Don Lippert, a longtime friend from PittsburghRolf Rohn enthusiastically offered his expertise and resources to ensure the new space would be both practical and spiritually uplifting.

His efforts included advising on the chapel's design and coordinating the gathering of essential furnishings and artworks. Among these sacred items were a majestic granite altar, meticulously crafted chairs and tables, and hand-painted wall hangings depicting saints like St. Michael the Archangel (Patron of the Capuchins) and Blessed Peter To Rot (their martyr). These pieces, along with additional donations from the Sisters of St. Francis In Millvale, PA, were carefully packaged and sent to Papua New Guinea, enhancing the chapel with a rich patrimony.

A highlight of Rolf's contributions was the exquisite stained glass San Damiano Crucifix. This particular crucifix, inspired by the original San Damiano Cross that played a pivotal role in the conversion of St. Francis of Assisi, is a symbol of Franciscan spirituality and mission. It depicts Christ in glory, surrounded by scenes from the Gospel narrative, inviting meditation and prayer. This commissioned masterpiece endured a challenging 56-day ocean voyage to reach its destination.

Now prominently displayed, the crucifix serves as the spiritual centerpiece of the chapel, embodying the union of faith and beauty that defines Rohn & Associates Design's commitment to sacred spaces worldwide.
