Restoring Sacred Beauty at St. John’s Seminary Chapel to Renew Faith and Preserve Catholic Tradition
St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, entrusted Rohn & Associates Design with developing a restoration program for their historic sacred chapel. The first phase focused on reviving the original Romanesque beauty of the priceless murals painted by Italian artist Gonippo Raggi, one of the foremost Church artists of the early 20th century. Over one hundred years had passed since this masterpiece, which authentically expresses New England Catholic faith, was painted. Our highly skilled artists were honored with the challenging task of restoring the original colors and forms that had, over time and through previous restorations, lost much of their brilliance and detail.
The painstaking restoration of the apse mural took place over many months. Our team worked closely with church officials to ensure its excellent care while gradually revealing new life with rich hues embellished with gold. We also framed the apse windows with decorative paintings that enhance the images depicted on the existing art glass. Finally, we carefully restored a crucifix with symbols of the Four Evangelists and placed it in its original location.
The second phase, the restoration of the liturgical furniture and sanctuary, will begin next year.
