Cathedral Door Undergoes Magnificent Restoration to Preserve Catholic Church History

As many of you know, in addition to creating timeless custom artworks that reflect both local and universal Church history, Rohn & Associates Design is committed to preserving our rich Catholic heritage by helping closed churches find new homes for their sacred treasures.

We recently facilitated the sale of this beautiful hand-carved door with crucifixion image, which welcomed parishioners to the old Houston Co-Cathedral from its founding in 1896 until the dedication of the more contemporary new sacred space in 2008. This left the Cathedral with an important dilemma: what should be done with their beloved, unused patrimony—works that showcase the talent of artists and craftsmen who gave visible form to the local Christian community’s religious experience and devotion? As the liturgical designers of the new Co-Cathedral—and with extensive experience throughout Texas—we were in the unique position to offer guidance. Our team was grateful to place this 6’ 9” x 9’ 3” oak beauty with Sidney Ohlhausen, a generous benefactor to the local Regina Caeli Catholic Church. Mr. Ohlhausen not only purchased the door, but also had it repaired and restored by a talented local woodworker before donating this important piece of Catholic history.

Another Houston-area church, Annunciation, will be receiving two stained glass windows from the old Co-Cathedral—the Resurrection and Priesthood—thanks to Mr. Ohlhausen's generosity. These windows will be placed in the historic Foley mansion on the church grounds, which was gifted to Annunciation by another Houston philanthropist and is currently undergoing restoration. We’d like to take a moment to express our appreciation for this dedication and generosity, and to highlight the potential of restoring these overlooked, timeworn pieces to their original beauty, while preserving an important part of church history.
